New Orleans Shooting Leave 16 Injured
According to investigators, several hundred people were at Bunny Friend Playground for a block party, which included an impromptu music video filming, when two groups of people began firing at each other.
New Orleans Police Department said at least 16 were injured due to a direct gunshot wound or a graze wound.
Another local TV station, WGNO says the event was unpermitted and that local police were already headed to the park to break it up.
Media reports put the number of victims at 10 to 16 and said they had been taken to local hospitals.
Police had not yet named a suspect or suspects, and officials appealed to the public for their help in finding those responsible for the carnage. He said all the victims were listed in stable condition.
At least two gunmen were shooting into the crowd, an eye witness said, adding that they saw several people lying on the sidewalk after the shooting. “We need them to come forward and tell us who did this so we can bring these people to justice”, Harrison said.
As many as 500 people could have been in the park when the shooting happened, said police chief Michael Harrison.
He noted the parade was permitted to take place and was staffed heavily by police.
Landrieu said the shooting is not something that can be tolerated in the city.
Landrieu said in September that statistics show overall violent crime is down in New Orleans over the past 20 years. That’s the result, he has said, of hard choices made after he inherited an $80 million budget deficit in 2010.
