New Pennsylvania AG was prosecutor who didn’t charge Cosby
He is succeeding – for no more than a few months – Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat who is resigning following her conviction on charges she abused the powers of her office by leaking secret grand jury information to smear a rival and then lied under oath to cover it up.
“I have been honored to serve the people of Pennsylvania and I wish them health and safety in all their days”, Kane said in a statement.
On Monday night, after hearing days of testimony about petty feuds, political intrigue and “cloak-and-dagger” machinations, a Montgomery County jury convicted Kane of all nine counts against her, including perjury, obstruction and official oppression. Jail time is possible. He could remain on the job until Kane’s term ends in January, but the possibility exists that Wolf and the Senate could pick him or someone else to serve as a full attorney general during this period. He ran unsuccessfully for attorney general in 2004.
One thing we can say in Ms. Kane’s favor is that she had the good sense to resign nearly immediately after her conviction rather than delay the inevitable. On Tuesday, Wolf called Kane’s situation “unfortunate” and said her decision to resign “is the right one”.
Kane sought revenge against Frank Fina, a prosecutor in AG’s office before she was elected.
Shargel, who called the verdict “a crushing blow”, said he would appeal the judge’s decision to exclude the emails.
Kane’s office issued a two-sentence statement saying she would resign at the end of the workday today.
Kane looked back on her time serving the state, on her way into work this morning for the last time.
Kane’s resignation brings to a close her tumultuous three-year reign that was dominated by internal strife among her staff, several of whom sued her, alleging she retaliated against them for aiding prosecutors in the grand jury probe of her. Castor, a Republican, is a former Montgomery County district attorney.
“We should remember that the real victims of these scandals are the people of Pennsylvania who’ve been left behind by a government that often isn’t working for them”, said Montgomery County Commissioner Chairman Josh Shapiro.
NORRISTOWN The immunity of a key witness against Kathleen Kane could be under scrutiny, according to her successor, Bruce L. Castor Jr.
Kane, who refused to step down as attorney general when she was indicted previous year, announced Tuesday that she was resigning as required under state law.
“Most definitely. She should do time”, he said.
Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Butler County, who has been trying to get Kane impeached long before she was charged in the grand jury case, was unequivocal.
A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele declined to comment on Morrow’s fate or Castor’s comments.
After she was charged, the state Supreme Court suspended her law license, and she drained campaign funds to pay legal bills.

The scandal led to the firing of at least six state employees and the resignations of two Supreme Court justices – Seamus McCaffrey and Michael Eakin.
After Kane’s conviction, the judge ordered she surrender the passport by noon Tuesday as a condition of the own recognizance bail that will allow Kane to remain free while awaiting sentencing. She painted Kane as heedless of the law as she carried out her crimes.
