New poll: Iowa caucus race ‘tight as a tick’ between Trump, Cruz
Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump said Sunday he doesn’t watch professional football much anymore because the NFL has gone “soft” like the United States.
Donald Trump is building an extensive lead in New Hampshire, with nearly one-third of Republicans supporting him there, according to a Monmouth University poll released Monday.
“The son of a U.S. citizen born overseas is a natural-born citizen”, Cruz, the son of an American mother and a Cuban father who was born in Canada, told CNN in an interview broadcast on Sunday. “The point is, you’re not”.
Another Republican candidate, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, said on CBS” “Face the Nation’ it was unclear if Cruz qualified as a natural born citizen and that Democrats will likely challenge that.
In an apparent reference to Saturday night’s Wild Card game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals, during which a late helmet-to-helmet hit and a personal conduct penalty put Pittsburgh in field goal range to win the game, Trump declared that the “whole game” of football “is screwed up”. Ted Cruz, over his eligibility to be president and professed bafflement that he’s not beating him in Iowa polls, as a delicate detente between the two became ever more frayed.
Jeb Bush insists that Donald Trump will not win in 2016, but says if he’s “aspiring” to be the next president, “the dude ought to try to figure out what the nuclear triad is”.
Trump has repeatedly gone after Cruz’s eligibility to run for president in recent days, saying that his Canadian birth could become an issue Democrats will exploit in the general election. “What are you gonna do?” Under the Constitution, in order to be president, you must be a natural born citizen.
“Listen, any time somebody’s attacking your faith, it starts to suggest they’re getting really nervous about what’s happening in the race”, Cruz said. But he declined to elaborate further, saying, “we’ll discuss that later”.
While Cruz seemed to rule out the possibility that his mother was a dual citizen, he himself was a dual citizen of the USA and Canada and renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2014 in anticipation of his a presidential campaign.
He went on: “You can’t have a nominee who’s going to be subject to being thrown out as the nominee”. “I don’t think the American people are interested”. Tribe, however, also told ABC: “My own view as a constitutional scholar is that the better view, the one most consistent with the entire constitution, is the broader definition, according to which Cruz would be eligible”.
The Texas senator was first to announce his bid back in March, and has since been carefully laying the groundwork for a come-from-behind primary victory.
“What he should do is ask for declaratory judgment…” You can’t do that with you know, three weeks to go, you’re not allowed to do that.
