New spokesman appointed for military operation against Boko Haram

An attack suspected to have been carried out by the group recently in a village in Dalori, Borno State, left no fewer than 86 persons killed with the sect allegedly burning some children alive.

While speaking with journalists after arriving Maiduguri from an official visit to Saudi Arabia, the governor described the comments of the senator as either “emotional or misquoted”.

He however failed to contradict the claims by the Senator that the insurgents are still active even in parts of the local governments the military claimed it has liberated from Boko Haram.

Mr Garbai’s assertion has been disputed by the military and Senate Leader Mohammed Ndume, who on Sunday, February 7, said that a lot has been achieved by the military in retrieving captured Borno communities from the insurgents.

The governor said: “The claim by the senator representing Borno Central in the senate, Senator Baba Kaka Garbai that the military has not degraded Boko Haram, was emotional outburst”.

“The recent unfortunate attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on communities close to Maiduguri, despite our successes, call for concern”, the army said in a statement, according to AFP.

Shettima praised the military whom he said was winning the war on insurgency.

“It is a wrong assumption that most of the local governments in Borno are recaptured from the Boko Haram”. The governor said service chiefs have visited the theatre of operation severally since their appointment to boost the morale of troops, urging the people to support the military and efforts of the Federal Government. He disclosed that the northern governor’s forum under his leadership has constituted a committee to draw an action plan for the region.
