New “Star Wars” film exceeds $1 billion mark in global box office
Star Wars: The Force Awakens pulled it in over the Christmas weekend. Warner Bros., which has had a horrific year at the box office, can at least content itself with the fact that it’s only a gun for hire on this one.
The Force Awakens” has reached $1 billion at the box office, achieving the milestone with record-setting hyper speed.
The latest Star Wars film has become the fastest movie ever to pass $US1 billion mark in ticket sales. Once the latest Star Wars is released in China on January 9, it will likely surpass Jurassic World’s global total fairly quickly.
The film has yet to open in China, the second biggest film market in the world.
The world domination of “The Force Awakens” is far from over, however. This was easily enough to break the record for largest 2 weekend ever. It was set to hit the US$1-billion mark no later than yesterday, its 12th day in theatres. Let me repeat-10 days. That weekend saw blockbusters like “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as well as “Avatar”, in it’s second week. The look at a stepfather’s attempts to outshine his wife’s stud of a first husband, came in second with a strong US$38.8 million from 3,271 theaters.
“The Force Awakens is going to reflect 30 plus years of that struggle, which will be an interesting story indeed”.
Launched in 100 theaters, “The Hateful Eight” grabs the #11 spot on the weekend chart. I’ll be helping with a second watch. More records fell this weekend (no surprise) with more expected to be broken in the week ahead.
Titanic dominates the eighth-twelfth weekends. (1982, 16 weeks) and Titanic (1997, 15 weeks), respectively.
The soaring receipts have surprised even Disney executives and underscore the opportunities from the company’s 2012 purchase of “Star Wars” owner Lucasfilm.
12 – The number of days it took the film to net $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide. So how big will “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” get?
A juggernaut like “Star Wars” empowers the entire industry, Dergarabedian said.
