New ‘Star Wars’ film to set all-time N. American box office record
Another day, another box office milestone that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has reached and toppled, with the seventh installment of the franchise beating out “Avatar” as the highest grossing movie of all time in America. However, the movie had grossed $758.2 million in ticket sales from the USA and Canada as of Tuesday, guaranteeing the threshold would be passed Wednesday.
While the feat by “Star Wars” is impressive, it still has a way to go catch up to “Avatar’s” worldwide box office tally of $2.78 billion. While “Star Wars” dominated, there were still plenty of other movies earning big bucks. “Daddy’s Home” remained in second place adding another $29 million to its tally.
This number doesn’t account for inflation, of course; on adjusted lists, The Force Awakens is still at #21 with an adjusted gross of $750 million, while Avatar is at #14 with $837 million. “The Force Awakens has instantly become a serious awards player, massive”. ZEN Studios has made no exceptions since they’ve just announced that they will be releasing two new tables based on The Force Awakens film for Pinball FX2. After today’s grosses are calculated, “The Force Awakens” will likely surpass “Skyfall”, “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and maybe even “Iron Man 3” in the overseas grossing race. Box office analysts predict a Chinese gross of between $200 and $300 million.
Chances are you’ve heard of this little movie called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, and you’ve probably heard it’s breaking all sorts of records. Creator George Lucas sold the franchise to Disney in 2012 for $four.
The Force Awakens is set to breath new life into the Star Wars series and has been a critical hit as well as a commercial smash. For the time being, Avatar stands at No. 2 in North America with $760,507,625.
