New Star Wars one of highest grossing movies in Germany, overseas
The movie opens in US theaters on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015.
You would really have to be living in an ice cave on Hoth for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens hype train to have passed you by. Titanic still remains in second place with $2.19 billion.
Star Wars Time report that it will only premiere with Captain America: Civil War, which is due into cinemas on May 6, 2016.
Some of these records include the best all-time opening weekend of $247,9 million, fastest film to cross the $500 million, $600 million and $700 million with Hollywood analysts predicting it will cross the $800 and $900 million mark with the former set to be crossed asearly as this coming Monday. This was enough to push the film past $900 million internationally.
Of course, as with any massive movie release, there are bound to be some spoilers, and The Force Awakens is no different. At this point the total gross is up to $31 million domestically and $32.4 million worldwide, with only a few markets open overseas thus far.
China was the last market for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to land in, and it has really taken off with its debut this weekend. “The Hateful Eight”, $12 million. 4. Its $38 million was still a strong opening for the month of January. However, it was almost defeated by Leonardo DiCaprio and his bear.
The only wide release (since The Revenant had a two-week limited release) this weekend was the horror film The Forest starring Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer.
Looking to knock Star Wars out of first we have the Ice Cube-Kevin Hart comedy Ride Along 2 as well as Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (might as well call it BAY-ghazi in terms of explosions and incendiary devices that get top billing).
Daddy’s Home has proven surprisingly resilient despite lackluster reviews, falling to third with an estimated $15 million, but has topped $116.3 million in domestic revenue. The movie has proven to be Disney’s most successful picture to date. This one should be able to get to at least $30 million in the U.S., which will make it a profitable endeavor considering the $10 million budget.
Sisters made another $7.1 million this weekend, bringing its total to just under $75 million. The film should end its domestic run with $85 million to $90 million.
What, if anything, did you see at the movies this weekend? All were three-day weekend bows, but The Force Awakens’ $52.6m over two days still looks weaker.

However, the well-regarded frontier epic has a price tag of $135 million, meaning it has a lot of ground to cover to make back its costs. Both American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook made over $130 million.
