New Supergirl Trailer Previews the Season to Come

The backstory is that Kara Zor-El is Superman’s older cousin who was sent from her planet Krypton to look after the infant. He even puts her in these ridiculous spandex booty shorts and a crop top, which she easily vetoes.

In a conference call with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Ali Adler and star Melissa Benoist, Berlanti said of the moment, “That speech was in the original pitch for the show”.

But Supergirl would like a seat at the superhero table on the small screen. It’s been forty years since we’ve gotten to see a female superhero lead a TV show, and you won’t be disappointed. Previews teased that she comes to Earth to help her cousin, but he does not need her help when she lands. Right off the back they get right into the origin of Supergirl and Superman and didn’t spend a lot of time explaining it. Good work right off the back. Kara learns very different things from these worlds. “Every time I’m around [girls], especially a little girl, it just warms my heart”. She is charming and goofy and as courageous as her cousin, Superman. When Kara pouts at one of Cat’s directives, Flockhart purrs, “It’s not that I don’t see your frown”.

How can I watch it? Cat Grant is a bit of a Devil Wears Prada caricature right now, but Calista Flockhart is clearly having fun in the role. But, no. She was great, and her scenes with Melissa are priceless. Exhausted of living a “normal” life and hiding her gifts, Kara reveals herself to the world. Season 1 will show Kara’s journey to becoming “Supergirl”, as well as her backstory.

Did I already mention that Kara’s excitement is infectious? Dean Cain previously portrayed Superman/Clark Kent for four seasons on Lois & Clark. And they’re only part of a much wider trend, because superheroes are as popular, and profitable, on TV as they are in the movies.

And Kara will not just have to face the usual DC villains in the Supergirl pilot. Well, there’s The Flash and Arrow over at the CW, Gotham on Fox, Heroes: Reborn on NBC, Marvel’s Agents of Shield on ABC, and Daredevil, Jessica Jones and three other shows in the works on Netflix, so the short answer to your question is: a lot.

For fans of Superman who never really got into Supergirl, this program provides plenty of connection to that more established world. But I am getting ahead of myself. Specifically, heat vision again looks like laser vision, and X-ray vision is more see-through vision again.

Actress Melissa Benoist loves to splurge on massages. Hopefully this will improve with time.

Berlanti assures us, “I’m sure we’ll get to it in one of the episodes”. Of course, I’m not complaining; I always want more.

The much anticipated SUPERGIRL flies into the prime lineup. It has the confidence and joy of The Flash, which isn’t a coincidence since both shows were developed by the same creative team.
