New Texans QB buys his mom a new car

When Florida State defensive end DeMarcus Walker was chosen in the second round by the Denver Broncos, he became the 12th defensive lineman drafted from FSU since 2008, seven of whom were drafted in the second round or higher. He completed a 17-yard pass to Jordan Leggett. To gain a better perspective on his lack of accuracy, his career completion percentage at Pittsburgh was only 56.8.

And just two picks later, the Houston Texans traded up with the Cleveland Browns to take Watson. A touchdown to interception ratio of 90-32 is very good, but the increasing interception numbers each year are a concern.

Watson is not a squeaky clean quarterback prospect.

While I believe that Watson’s abilities will translate well immediately, it is not unfair to look at the move to land Watson with a critical eye.

Watson, however, needs to step up during the Texans’ playoff and championship window.

When Tony Romo unexpectedly retired to join CBS, and Houston showed no interest in signing other available veteran quarterbacks, it was clear that the Texans would have to invest an early pick in the 2017 National Football League draft on a rookie quarterback.

This is why it would be wise to at least consider Weeden as the starter.

“We’ve said all along that we feel comfortable with Tom Savage”, Texans general manager Rick Smith told NFL Network’s James Palmer on NFL Total Access after the first round of the draft on Thursday night.

NEEDS ADDRESSED: After taking care of their most glaring need by adding Watson, the Texans got some help on the offensive line by taking Bucknell tackle Julien Davenport in the fourth round.

SHOULD CONTRIBUTE EARLY: The Texans should get early contributions from third-round pick D’Onta Foreman. There are plenty of nuances to explore when it comes to quarterback performance and Watson’s tape shows us plenty more than just victories – he has plenty of flaws. Osweiler led the team to a win against the Raiders before keeping the job the following week and losing to the Patriots. But he’ll also have Watson breathing down his neck and looking for playing time if he starts to struggle a little.
