New Year will bring new minimum wage in some states
Maryland’s minimum is now set at $8.25, but that will increase 50 cents to $8.75 in July.
MA and California are pushing wages up to ten dollars an hour in the new year.
Tips do not count toward the minimum wage. For those calling for a higher minimum wage, 2015 was a win. Some say it can reduce poverty and inequality, but others says it impacts less than 5 percent of the workforce and pushing the minimum too high can discourage hiring.
The increase follows the first report of the Low Pay Commission, an independent body tasked with examining the appropriate rate of the statutory minimum wage.

Changes to the minimum wage are based on the nationwide Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for a 12-month period ending each August 31.
