New York Giants Announce Ben McAdoo As Head Coach
The New York Giants made it official on Thursday, promoting offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to head coach, taking over after the 12-year reign of Tom Coughlin. He and Eli Manning have been a tremendous offensive team together since McAdoo came to the team from the Green Bay Packers’ staff before the 2014 season. He was a hot name in coaching circles that year, but not widely known to fans.
The Giants announced McAdoo’s appointment on Thursday, preferring the 38-year-old over the five other candidates they interviewed.
Mara said it was important to him to hear McAdoo’s thoughts on the matter.
McAdoo was the Giants’ offensive coordinator the past two seasons under Coughlin.
Manning endorsed McAdoo after the season, but Mara said that was only one factor in the team’s decision to hire him after interviewing six men for the job, all of whom Mara said were well qualified to lead the team.
“This is the capital of the world, and the football capital of the world and with that comes a certain amount of pressure, pressure I look forward to”, McAdoo told reporters Friday. So, no pressure or anything. Coughlin and the Giants obviously split on bitter terms, but the old NY coach has reportedly taken his name out of the running for the vacancy in Philadelphia, and San Francisco has hired Chip Kelly, so it appears Coughlin won’t be coaching anytime soon. He’s paid his dues. NY posted its second consecutive 6-10 record this season and missed out on the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
The Giants are leaving the door open for Coughlin to work with the team in a capacity to be determined. I figured him or Spagz would have been a great pick. I’m not sure every head coach in the league would say that about himself.
Coughlin would have become the first to serve as head coach of the two NFC East rivals. “I have been preparing for this moment my entire professional life”. Some have suggested he may not be ready, and as I said last week, we want a coach who feels like he has something to prove. We were all impressed with his energy, his enthusiasm, his vision and his desire.
Tom Coughlin won’t be the head coach of the Eagles, which is something the Giants’ owners are very pleased about.
The fate of the Giants’ roster rests exclusively in the hands of Jerry Reese.
Reportedly, the Giants took a lot of inspiration from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ coaching model, and the similarities between Mike Tomlin and McAdoo are easy to see.
McAdoo earned praise for his work with Manning, who completed 63 percent of his passes the past two seasons under McAdoo’s tutelage and threw for 65 touchdowns with only 28 interceptions.
Mara and the Giants have always craved stability, and Mara admitted that McAdoo having been with the organization for two seasons already was part of the decision-making process. I was the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and he had called me on the phone, was seeking an opportunity just to talk football. Yes, it’s true that McAdoo is not going to run around the Giants’ complex undoing everything Coughlin did.
