New York Giants: Ben McAdoo Debuts as Head Coach
The precipitous decline since the 2011 Super Bowl season is the reason Mara stood behind a lectern Friday morning to introduce former offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo as the successor to former coach Tom Coughlin, a day for the owner to promise a new wave of optimism and a bold, brand new direction for a franchise he admitted only last week had lost its credibility.
His job now is to get the franchise back on track.
The veteran assistant was promoted to head coach officially on Thursday, replacing Tom Coughlin, who resigned last week after leading the Giants for 12 seasons.
Fair or not, now it’s up to McAdoo to turn Big Blue around because Mara’s apparent support for Reese means he’s not willing to point the finger at the person most responsible for the team’s deficiencies.
This year’s Giants’ injury-ridden roster was not talented enough to begin with, even in an embarrassingly lowly NFC East, but the 69-year-old Coughlin was the only one to pay for the team’s disappointing output in 2015.
“We were all impressed with his energy, his enthusiasm, his vision and his desire”, Mara said.
“This job is not for the faint of heart and I’m the right man for the job”, McAdoo said to The New York Post.
Reportedly, the Giants took a lot of inspiration from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ coaching model, and the similarities between Mike Tomlin and McAdoo are easy to see.
When he was hired two years ago, McAdoo recalled that Coughlin told him not to mess with the clocks. Manning’s 35 TD passes this past season were a career high, and just one short of the team record held by Y.A. Tittle. “I think it’s a good philosophy, it’s a good thing to have, and it’s a good concept”. They met again Wednesday, when he also spoke with team chairman Steve Tisch and treasurer Jonathan Tisch. Adam Gase, the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator who was hired by the Dolphins this month, is 37. “I’ll coach the team”.
The remaining coaching candidates who have already interviewed with the Eagles are Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, Eagles interim head coach and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley, and former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.
He landed his first National Football League assistant job in 2004 with the New Orleans Saints.
While being the offensive coordinator for the Giants the past two season, McAdoo has earned the trust and respect from those within the organziation. “And once we do fix the problem, we’ll address it in the practice schedule, we’ll practice those situations and we’ll take that rearview mirror we’ll rip it off, throw it in the back seat and look out the windshield”. “He drove all night just for an opportunity to sit down and talk football”.
McAdoo was the obvious choice for the Giants. His version of the West Coast offense – and the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. – has helped revive the offense.
McAdoo also interviewed for the coaching job in Philadelphia. While McAdoo insisted the coaching staff is still fluid, reports indicate that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will return next season despite the blood curdling statistics.
