New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul visits team facility
Jason Pierre-Paul reported to the facility of the New York Giants on Monday and hopes the team doctors will clear him to return to the field, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The on-going saga between Jason Pierre-Paul, the Delaware who lost his index finger and part of his thumb on his right hand after a fireworks accident this summer, and the New York Giants has been never-ending.
Early Monday afternoon, Pierre-Paul tweeted “God is good”, his first tweet since October 4.
Now, the meeting is about to set up a potentially contentious three-week period that could decide the future of his career. It must be signed by November. 17 or Pierre-Paul can not play this season; however, if the Giants rescind the tender, Pierre-Paul becomes an unrestricted free agent. From there, though, things get murkier.
In the end, the Giants would very much like to have back a healthy Pierre-Paul, especially given the current state of their almost non-existent pass rush. The person spoke under condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to publicly comment on Pierre-Paul’s situation. Since Pierre-Paul has already missed almost half the season, however, both sides would likely need to come to an agreement that would pay him only for the time he would be with the team.
There’s also the question of that franchise tender.
Now, it seems the Giants have all of the control.
The Giants used their franchise tag on Pierre Paul, 26, after the two-time Pro Bowler finished his five-year, $20.05 million rookie contract last season. Prior to his accident, he was holding out hope that they’d reconsider and sign him to a long-term deal. After starting the season 0-2, the Giants have gone 4-1 since despite a defense that now is near the bottom of the league statistically in terms of yards allowed, is seeing quarterbacks complete two-thirds of their pass attempts and has mustered just nine sacks in seven games.
