New York Giants Not Getting Any Closer to Eli Manning
The Giants have expressed hope to sign Manning to a new deal before the start of the season, but according to Rapaport, there remains a “significant gap” in the negotiations.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said at a press conference on Monday that he believes a lot of good football is still left in Manning. Without a new contract, his franchise tag number next season would be about $24 million. Manning doesn’t care. He and the Giants know they’ll be paying him a huge salary next year.
Manning is a two-time Super Bowl Champion, and is now looking for possibly the final contract extension of his career.
Highest-paid player in football?
The NFL is now a pass-happy league, and if the very definition of average quarterback becomes the bellwether for highest-paid, the financial system may just not be able to handle it. “That is by no means been stated, it is by no means come out of my mouth, I’ve by no means stated it to my agent, I do not know the place individuals are getting their info”. While Manning does have two Super Bowl rings to his name, the notion that he is even close to being on the same level as Rodgers when it comes to their play on the field is laughable, and we’d be willing to bet that the Giants feel the same way.
“I don’t think about it”, Manning said.
Manning’s contract with the Giants will expire after the upcoming season.
It’s overlooked, mostly because of the Giants’ dismal 6-10 record last season, but Manning threw fewer interceptions (14) than older brother Peyton (15), the Colts’ Andrew Luck (16), the Saints’ Drew Brees (17) and Rivers (18).
With numbers like that, it’s no wonder Manning is trying to get as much as he can, if he’s going to lock himself up for the long run.
Roethlisberger’s new contract, agreed upon in March, will reportedly pay him $87.4 million over four years with $65 million guaranteed.
Mike Florio at NBC Sports, owned by NBC Universal along with CNBC, has a great analysis on this, breaking down the different options for both the Giants and Manning, in terms of what’s possible.
Neither side wants this to turn into on those big, unseemly only in New York distractions.
Although Manning is nowhere near the top of the QB ranks entering the upcoming season, he still has decent leverage in contract negotiations.
BRONCOS: Defensive end Kenny Anunike, who starred in the preseason opener, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday amid concerns he’s suffered another serious injury. “That’s what I think about”.
