New York Jets crush Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans, 30-8
NY has made a stunning turnaround since, winning three games in a row for the first time since 2011 and positioning itself directly in the wild-card hunt.
“[It] took us long enough”, defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson said, referring to the three-game streak.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was sensational yet again, completing 58 percent of his passes by going 21-for-36 on his attempts for 263 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions for a quarterback rating of 108.9.
Tennessee won the coin toss Sunday and elected to defer to the second half, the first of many mistakes the Titans would make on this day.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles said Monday that his post-game message to players following Sunday’s win was “no different than the last couple of weeks”. Muhammad Wilkerson had three sacks for NY, which was coming off a stunning 23-20 overtime win over the Giants last week and had some wondering if there might be a letdown against the lowly Titans (3-10). “I think our health is pretty good and so we’ve set ourselves up offensively just to continue to get better”. Brandon Marshall continues to produce in his first season in NY.
“It was one of those games we wish we could have back and start it over”, Titans linebacker Brian Orakpo said.
It was the worst game of rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota’s career, with five sacks and only 21 of his 39 passes caught.
Andrews took a direct snap and threw to Mariota, who had lined up as a wide receiver.
“That was great”, Bowles said. Pryor made up for his mistake by catching WR Harry Douglas from behind on a 51-yard gain in which Douglas broke free after Skrine and CB Antonio Cromartie collided on a pick play. “I thought we were going to be able to use our momentum a little bit, but the Jets played well”.
FITZ MAGIC: Fitzpatrick’s previous career high for TD passes in a season was 24, accomplished twice with Buffalo. This was the first time Ivory had a 100 yard performance since week 6.
Decker has also played excellent for the Jets this season, as he has totaled 66 receptions, 875 receiving yards, and nine receiving touchdowns.
“This guy just works hard and he’s had an interesting career”, Marshall said. Interim head coach Mike Mularkey isn’t likely to get consideration for the full-time gig, and NFL Network reported Sunday morning that general manager Ruston Webster could be fired after another disastrous season.
The Titans missed a chance at consecutive victories for the first time since the end of the 2013 season in a loss when they were dominated from start to finish.
“That was not good”, Mularkey said.
67 degrees – hardly suggested December, the time when National Football League teams make their stretch drive toward the playoffs. A 14-play drive on their opening possession was capped by Fitzpatrick’s 16-yard toss to Decker, who caught his ninth TD pass of the season.
This offseason, the Jets robbed the Chicago Bears in a trade for Marshall to give them an elite wide receiver.
“We went up to the” line of scrimmage, Fitzpatrick said, “and there was nobody over there on Brandon”. Looking ahead, the Jets have a very winnable game against Dallas next week followed by tough divisional games against the Patriots and the Bills.
