New York Jets quarterback Gino Smith breaks jaw after being “sucker-punched”
The New York Jets linebacker was released by his team on Wednesday morning after “sucker punching” teammate Geno Smith in a locker room bust-up.
Coach Todd Bowles made the announcement during an impromptu news conference before training camp practice was scheduled to start.
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been ruled out for up to 10 weeks after having his jaw broken by a punch from teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali. Schefter reports Enemkpali bought smith a $600 plane ticket to get to the camp and wanted to be reimbursed.
After the incident, Bowles said that he sat down with both players – together and separately – and then decided to release Enemkpali, saying that he would have cut him even if he was a starter. “You don’t walk up to a man and punch him in the face”.
“It was something very childish that sixth-graders could’ve talked about”.
On the day that Geno Smith lost the next six-to-10 weeks of what could be a make-or-break football season and IK Enemkpali lost his job, Cris Carter still managed to come out of this peevish brouhaha looking the most idiotic.
Arizona Cardinals starting right tackle Bobby Massie has been suspended for three games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, the Associated Press reported.
Free-agent quarterback Michael Vick, who spent last season with the Jets, reached out to Smith via Twitter.
Smith took to Instagram vowing, “ILL BE BACK!”.
After Smith failed to show up, Enemkpali demanded that the Jets quarterback give back the $600. “I think that’s one of my strengths as well, so we’ll get on the same page”.
Fans and social media did not express much sympathy or mercy on Smith for being the victim of the violent assault.
At 19 years of age, at a bar when he was at Louisiana Tech., Enemkpali got involved in an altercation and punched an off-duty cop who was a working security. The Jets will need to find another veteran backup as insurance for Fitzpatrick with rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps the only remaining quarterbacks on the roster.
