New York Knicks fire Derek Fisher
With Monday’s firing of head coach Derek Fisher, the New York Knicks officially gave in to the creeping sense of dysfunction that’s settled over the team over the last few weeks.
Anthony said Tuesday he was on board with Rambis’ goal.
On the one hand, Fisher certainly wasn’t a Coach of the Year candidate.
“I want to express my deep gratitude to James Dolan, Phil Jackson, Steve Mills and the entire New York Knicks organization for giving me this incredible opportunity”, Fisher wrote. We’ll see if Durant’s star shines bright enough in Jackson’s eyes to make him consider Brooks when push comes to shove.
“Someone has to match the style of the way we do things and there’s a certain style that I have that I think works and I’ve found worked before”, Jackson said.
Fisher finished with a record of 40-96, the second worst winning percentage in Knicks history at 29%. Early Monday morning it was reported that head coach Derek Fisher was sacked, and that has since been confirmed, according to NBA.com.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that there is a “strong belief” that Jackson will “eventually find his way” back with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Knicks are 23-32 as of this writing but are within striking distance to at least make the sixth to eighth spots in a highly competitive Eastern Conference. Phil Jackson failed as a GM as far as hand-picking a head coach in which he used his heart instead of his basketball IQ and knowledge of the game of basketball.
His attachment to the scheme that helped him win 11 world titles as a coach certainly appeared to factor into his first search for a head coach after taking over as Knicks president in 2014. Last season, no one expected much, especially once Carmelo Anthony was lost for the season and the team traded all veterans in an effort to fast-forward the rebuild, and a 17-65 record followed. “I know what a transformer is”. High-profile Jackson acolytes like Luke Walton and Brian Shaw are waiting in the wings.
Interim coach Kurt Rambis repeated his mantra the playoffs are vital – seemingly a purposeful about-face from Derek Fisher’s rhetoric.
