New York Post: Ex-NBA Boss David Stern to Run For NYC Mayor?
“He’s pretty bored”, a source told the Post. David Stern has as much motivation you’d expect out of a politician with all the weight to throw around. The downside, though, is that it could get other commissioners thinking about political office and nobody is ready for President Roger Goodell.
To some it might come as a surprise that David Stern-old, white, wealthy, union-busting David Stern-wouldn’t run as a Republican, but as the Post notes, Stern is a lifelong Democrat. ESPN said in March 2006 that Stern had given the Democratic Party $781,780 over the years. Stern took over the league when it was troubled but was able to turn it into an global powerhouse and has instituted things like drug testing and the salary cap.
What’s more, Stern’s NBA teamed up with FIBA for the Basketball Without Borders program and constantly reached out to markets outside the United States with exhibitions and advertising efforts.
Hand checking and illegal defense were removed as well as having a dress code for players. Ron Artest and several Indiana Pacers players charged the stands and fought the fans in a game in Detroit in November 2004.
“He’s tough as nails”. “He’s popular with the black community”. Current Mayor Bill de Blasio will not be too pleased with Stern adding to the list of potential candidates, including wealthy businessman Don Peebles, NYC comptroller Scott Stringer and public advocate Letitia James. Stern himself said, “I remain a happy Westchester resident and am very busy as a senior adviser to a number of enterprises”. While reportedly “flattered” by the suggestion, Stern doesn’t appear to be interested in the opportunity.
Stern, a lawyer, served as the NBA’s general counsel prior to being named commissioner.
