New York prison break: Joyce Mitchell sentenced for up to seven years
“If I could take it all back I would”, she said.
Mitchell, 52, received the agreed upon sentence as part of her plea deal. “I live with regret every day and will for the rest of my life”.
Joyce Mitchell pleaded guilty in July to promoting prison contraband and facilitating criminal activity. She mouthed “I love you” to Lyle before leaving the courtroom in handcuffs.
Matt and Sweat broke out of the Clinton County Correctional Facility on June 6 by cutting through walls and pipes with tools supplied by Mitchell, who says she fell under their sway and then was too scared to refuse their demands.
Mitchell’s lawyer objected to the sum, which will be the subject of a hearing at a later date – and he also suggested that Matt and Sweat may have had other accomplices who have not been caught. Stephen Johnston told the judge.
“I just don’t find that explanation credible”, Ryan said.
“I had no intention of ever meeting them”, Mitchell said in an interview with NBC’s “Today” that aired earlier this month. “I was supposed to bring a shotgun”. Officials said he gave the two prisoners frozen hamburger meat Mitchell used to hide the hacksaw blades she smuggled to Sweat and Matt.
Sweat had been scheduled to appear in Plattsburgh City Court on Tuesday to face felony escape charges, but his case was pulled from the docket, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said on Friday in an email, without elaborating.
The escape led to a three-week manhunt through the Adirondacks that ended with Matt being shot and killed and Sweat being captured. She accepted a plea bargain that prevented her from facing charges involving the plot to kill her husband and any sexual-assault or rape charges involving her alleged sexual relationship with the inmates. “That’s her biggest downfall”.
