New York’s ‘Giant’ Second Half Hands Bears 8th Loss
The New York Giants defeated the Chicago Bears 22-16 at a windy MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but like most Giants games, it wasn’t good on the heart. Harris jump started Big Blue’s second half with a 46-yard kickoff return. “I’m proud of the way the guys responded at halftime, 13-nothing in the second half”. It has them in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
The Bears did force the Giants into third-and-8 or more on eight occasions, but the Giants converted a pair of fourth-and-2 plays in the first half that led to a touchdown and a field goal, and that spark simply wasn’t to be found. Miller used his off-arm to shield the defender, while using his other arm to make the one-handed touchdown grab. Miller had three catches for 61 yards, including a 19-yard TD in the first half.
After being limited to two first downs, Jay Cutler drove the Bears to the Giants 30 at the two-minute warning. For Donnell, this is a first but the veteran tight end has not been on the field with the offense since the bye week. In the first half against NY, the Bears sure came out that way.
Per the FOX broadcast crew, the Giants are an NFL-best 7-2 this season in games decided by 7 points or less.
Cutler missed five games earlier in the year due to a thumb injury he suffered in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Life was good following 30 minutes of football. By achieving one first-down, NY could have run out the clock. A situational player because of a knee injury that sidelined him the first six weeks, McPhee was hard to find until he knocked Manning down on a third-and-10 pass late in the fourth quarter. He and rookie Paul Perkins combined to push the Giants past the century mark in rushing for a second straight game. “It was really on point, so you have to just play through it”. It forced an awkward throw along the boundary for running back Rashad Jennings that Demontre Hurst almost picked off. John Fox’s squad heads into a home matchup with the 5-6 Tennessee Titans next week. They got even on their first drive of the second half, completing a 9-play, 56-yard drive with a 9-yard pass to Will Tye. Olivier Vernon played angry, recording a huge tackle for a loss and a sack, while Jason Pierre-Paul took over the game with his 2.5 sacks, three QB hits and batted pass. Johnathan Hankins picked up a half a sack, while he and Damon Harrison clogged running lanes late in the game. “It happens every now and then, but you get their best shot from everybody you play against, and it’s going to be a close game…we love it, we love it being on us”. Bobby Massie can not get healthy fast enough.
Odell Beckham Jr. was throwing tantrums, Weston Richburg was getting thrown out of games for tormenting Josh Norman, Ereck Flowers was shoving reporters in the locker room, the Josh Brown incident was in full swing, and Ben McAdoo was starting fights with Mike Francesa on the radio. McPhee finished with 1 total tackle, no sacks and 1 QB hit. “Just continue to pick my spots”.
It is a defensive line specifically, and a pass rush in general, that has caught fire at the right time for the streaking Giants (7-3). The offensive line did not allow a sack, so the unit didn’t shoot itself in the foot and did just enough to get the job done. Connor Shaw suffered a broken left leg in the third exhibition game, and Brian Hoyer suffered a broken left arm during the October 20 loss to the Packers.
For the fourth game in a row, safety Landon Collins had an interception.
Nothing has come easy for the Giants this season, even in the games they are supposed to win.
