New York Taxi Driver Received a $25000 Fine for Racially Discriminating Passengers
Based on a recent news report, a New York taxi driver received a $25,000 fine for racially discriminating passengers in October 2013.
But before Jordan could yell, “taxi”, again, Raza was putting out the welcome mat for two white women just 25 feet away, according to a Human Rights Commission report.
“I ran up to the vehicle and was like, ‘Are you kidding me picking up these two?’ And I did say some bad words, these people and you wouldn’t take my family”.
However, just as she was looking for another cab, her 16-year-old daughter pointed out that Raza picked up two white women up the block.
“Baqir Raza refused to transport Ms. Jordan and her daughters on the basis of their race and color”, Kramer wrote in the July 27 decision.
The penalty will be divided into $10,000 going to Jordan and the remaining $15,000 to pay off a civil penalty.
“I’m happy for the judgment”, the 57-year-old, who says she routinely faces this type of discrimination, told DNAinfo.
New Yorkers often have to put up with cab drivers’ racial discrimination.
According to the judge’s recap, the women testified in February that the cab’s “available” light was on, but Raza told them he was going off duty.
He said he received a letter from the city’s Human Rights Commission last year telling him they brought charges against him, and says he sent them a letter explaining the white passengers got inside his cab first. Rather, he argues that the white women jumped in his cab.
“I’m always out with my young daughter trying to grab a cab”, said Jordan. She called me a lowlife cabbie and those women white b–s.
“When someone just doesn’t want to pick you up because of what you look like, it’s not a good thing for my daughter to see”, she said.
“She was using inappropriate language”, he told the paper.
But his own trip log showed the dropoff and pickup were about two minutes apart, and he admitted violating city taxi rules against unjustly refusing passengers and paid a $200 fine, Kramer noted.
She then reported Raza to the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).
