New York Yankees retire Derek Jeter’s No. 2 jersey
The day game will air on YES and the night game will air on ESPN. I’m talking about the real thing that used to be, two games for the price of one.
Introduced by a recording of late Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard – it was played before Jeter’s at-bats following Sheppard’s death in 2010 – Jeter wore a blue three-piece peak-lapel suit, white collared shirt and no tie.
Because Jeter, from the time he ran out to shortstop for good in April of 1996, turned out to be as important a figure for the New York Yankees as Ruth was in the 1920s. But during practice he went out of his way to seek out Hinch and offer sympathy for the passing of Hinch’s father, who had died of a heart attack when Hinch was a college freshman five years earlier.
But this one is real, and it did not come about quickly.
Jeter became the 22nd player in franchise history to have his number retired.
“I was always the youngest”, Jeter said, “so I figured I’d be last”. They were trying to move 15 games over.500 for the first time since they went 89-73 in 2005 and won their only NL pennant.
Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers (43) delivers a pitch against the Los Angeles Angels during a MLB baseball game at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. “Let’s move on, how much are we selling the programs for, today?”
“Derek’s the face of the organization for this last generation where there was great success, obviously – five championships”, Boone says.
Fans with tickets to Saturday’s game can exchange them for another game, assuming availability, this season.
And then another junior exec chimes in with, “And Mr. Levine, have you forgotten too that it’s Jeter Night?” “My mom grew up the biggest Jeter fan ever”.
“Those definitely weren’t my best changeups”, Devenski said.
Something tells us he’ll be all right. First baseman and former middle infielder Yuli Gurriel, a Cuban defector, still cherishes his selection to the same all-tournament team as Jeter at the end of the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic. The rescheduled game will begin at 2:05 p.m. ET.
Along with retiring his number and putting a plaque in Monument park in his honor, the Yankees gave him framed replicas of both, plus a 14-karat white gold ring that listed his accomplishments.
Jeter would provide many more clutch moments, including the leadoff homer in the Subway Series, The Flip, Mr. November, The Dive, reaching the 3,000-hit club with a homer and delivering a walk-off single in his final game wearing the home pinstripes. There are a lot more numbers than that with him.
Tonight, with no questions, the main action is Derek Jeter. All of its runs came on homers by Justin Bour, J.T. Realmuto and Derek Dietrich.
