New York Yankees trade Aroldis Chapman to Chicago Cubs for prospects
The four-team All-Star was sent to Chicago in exchange for Gleybar Torres a prized prospect at shortstop, Adam Warren a right-hander and Billy McKinney an outfielder.
Torres is from Caracas, Venezuela and spent this season with the High A-ball affiliate out of Myrtle Beach.
From the Yankees perspective, the decision to trade for Chapman could hardly have worked out better.
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman, left, shakes hands with catcher Austin Romine after the Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in a baseball game Friday, July 22, 2016, in New York. “But that’s all I have”.
Making 88 appearances for Double-A Tennessee in 2016, the 21-year-old outfielder posted a.252 batting average accompanied by one home run, 31 RBI and a.355 on-base percentage. The new additions will likely cause some changes in the Cubs’ bullpen soon enough.
Speculation circulated Monday morning that one reason why the teams had not announced the trade earlier was because the Cubs were attempting to sign Chapman to a long-term deal.
“Oh yeah, if there’s a possibility, and God willing, yes”, he said.
The Yankees will also receive Warren, a right-handed pitcher whom they actually traded this past offseason for Starlin Castro. Charges weren’t filed against Chapman, who was suspended 30 games by Major League Baseball under the policy and ultimately served 29 because of a postponed game. The right-hander has 18 saves this season, as well as a 1.95 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 37 innings. After months of circulating rumors involving the franchise’s interest in a hard-throwing southpaw, the Cubs have delivered, picking up one of the hardest throwers in baseball.
Said Chapman: “I regret I did not exercise better judgment and for that I am truly sorry”. Looking back, I feel I have learned from this matter and have grown as a person. “But yeah, it’s tough”. He was alleged to have choked his girlfriend during a dispute at their Florida home and firing eight shots from a gun in the garage, according to a police report. “I’m a huge Chapman fan”. “For me it’s day by day”. He did well in NY and I wish him well.
Chapman’s teammates are hoping the deal doesn’t go through. “We’re trying to win games, and he’s a big part of that”. Thus, baseball’s sun may well have set today on the Bronx where Joe Girardi’s outfit has the look of the family dog snoozing on the front porch. “We don’t want to be broken up”.
“That’s a play we work on a lot in spring training”, Green said.
