Newcastle United agree £12m deal to sign Andros Townsend from Spurs
Townsend is set to become Newcastle’s third big signing of the transfer window within the next 24 hours.
Andros Townsend has almost completed a move to Newcastle United from boyhood club Tottenham.
Reports this morning claim that Spurs have agreed a £12m fee with Newcastle United for the winger, who has spent 16 years at the White Hart Lane club, rising through their academy and into the first team.
In total Townsend has played 93 times for Mauricio Pochettino’s men and scored 11 goals.
Watford were keen to loan Townsend and it is understood a temporary deal was also the player’s preference.
Townsend was demoted following a bust-up with Tottenham fitness coach Nathan Gardiner in November.
Having already signed Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet for a combined cost of £17m this month, Newcastle look poised to spend again in their attempt to escape relegation.
Townsend, 24, a regular in the England squad last season, has made just seven appearances for Spurs in all competitions this campaign and has not started a Premier League game so far.
“I came up for a cross and I got off balance, landed wrong and I felt a massive click in the knee”, says Krul. I could never turn that down.
Newcastle’s pursuit of the England worldwide finally achieved a breakthrough yesterday when Spurs officials reached a compromise agreement with their counterparts at St James’ Park.
Alongside some images of himself playing with the Under21s, Townsend wrote: “Been an absolute pleasure playing with the u21 boys the last 3 or 4 months!”
