According a report, 1.2 million Canadians will be booking off work this Friday in anticipation of Black Friday, the annual American shopping day over the American Thanksgiving weekend.
The study comes the same day that the Conference Board of Canada, which regularly monitors the mood of Canadian consumers, is predicting a Scrooge-like Christmas for many retailers. Now that broadband Internet is widely available, online retailers aren’t as dependent on that Monday shopping boost, but many still offer deals on that day, LPL wrote.
Canadian retailers are bracing for what could be the biggest Black Friday yet.
Past year was the first time Black Friday sales surpassed those on Boxing Day, according to Rob Cameron of Moneris, Canada’s largest processors of debit and credit card payments.
Statistics Canada says sales of cameras have actually gone down in November but remained stable in December.
LeBlanc says retailers should expect to see a change in when people buy, rather than an increase in spending.
Despite the high-profile departure of USA discount chain Target from Canada, along with the closures of Mexx, Boutique Jacob and Smart Set, consumers continue to spend.
He added that e-commerce retailers are also expecting strong sales and experts predict a surge in online transactions.

The survey, which polled 3,458 consumers across the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand indicated that Canadians are the ones most likely to watch their expenditures this year.

SAS also suggests that despite the rise of online shopping, many still crave the brick and mortar experience, with 82 per cent of Canadians indicating they will shop in-store. “In a year with a low dollar and good retail sales anyways, we think that it should certainly be an increase over last year”.
