Newly armed MS National Guard recruiters return to offices
At least seven governors around the country allowed members of the National Guard to carry weapons, after a gunman killed five people at a military recruiting center and a naval support center in Chattanooga on July 16.
The office did not release details of the proposal, but a statement from the governor said the plan would cover “guardsmen involved in state active duty as well as the four National Guard recruiting stations”.
The Hattiesburg storefront relocated to the 184th Sustainment Command in Laurel. “We did not have armed soldiers and airmen in our communities”. Gen. Augustus Collins said.
“The goal that we hope it serves is that it serves as a deterrent to an individual that may have the mindset to do something that tampers with our security measures”, he said.
“It’s important to let the community know that we’re back on the job”, Collins said. Specific details of this plan are classified and no further information will be provided. “We want to ensure the public that we are highly trained and that’s just a security measure for us”.
The guard has previously said recruiters will return to the storefront centers this week.
“I believe that, nationwide, we’ve created these gun-free zones and cowards that want to be a martyr for their cause are attracted to them because they know that they’re going to be more successful in whatever form of terrorism or activism that they are trying to accomplish”, Sen.
Secretary of Defense Ash Carter ordered a review of security policies at military bases following the Chattanooga shootings.
