Newly released video purportedly shows USA raid in Iraq
He was deployed three times in combat operations to Iraq and Afghanistan before 2004.
Carter approved the rescue under Operation Inherent Resolve.
In a statement, US Centcom commander General Lloyd Austin said: “We commend and congratulate the fearless individuals who participated in this successful operation that saved many lives, and we deeply mourn the loss of one of our own who died while supporting his Iraqi comrades engaged in a tough fight”. The US’ contradictory anti-terrorist policy in Iraq, whether they call it combat or not, is an attempt to show they are still relevant in the region, experts believe.
“Combat” is a term that Carter and many military officials have studiously avoided using over the past few months in an effort to comport with President Obama’s vow to keep US troops out of combat in Iraq.
Campaign memo describes staff cutbacks and salary reductions, for a 40 percent trim in total payroll costs.
The others were local residents and Islamic State fighters that the group had accused of spying or treason, said USA and Kurdish officials. With the exit of most USA troops completed, Obama declared a formal end to the United States’ 11-year combat mission in August 2011.
Carter said the freed hostages recounted their experiences, adding that “we could see” graves next to the compound.
Army Col. Steve Warren told The Associated Press that Wheeler and dozens of USA special operations troops and Iraqi forces raided a compound near the city of Kirkuk, freeing approximately 70 Iraqi prisoners from captivity. The Kurdistan Regional Government requested USA involvement, Carter said, because of the “unique capabilities” of the American military.
USA and coalition forces will work to disrupt ISIL’s distribution of oil in a lucrative marketplace, he said, adding that one of ISIL’s “customers” is the Assad regime.
The F-35 is having a hard time landing on Capitol Hill because of budget concerns and safety issues. Carter said Wheeler’s response enabled the mission to succeed. That September, Secretary of State John Kerry said that American ground operations could start again in Iraq “if something very, very dramatic changes”.
Two videos apparently showing the same raid have emerged, one published by NBC News and obtained from news site, Arab24, and another published by the Washington Post and sourced from Kurdish news site, Rudaw.
He was the first American serviceman killed in combat with Islamic State, and from a description of his actions and his service record, his absence will be sorely felt by his comrades and his unit. But in that case, there were no US casualties. His death has raised questions about the nature of USA involvement in the fight against ISIS.

“We have now heard from rescued hostages. So the sum of all this will be a few valuable intelligence”.
But Carter said it was likely not a one-off, noting that a “significant cache” of intelligence had been retrieved.
“You learn a great deal because you collect the documentation, you collect various electronic equipment and so forth”, he said. “When we find opportunities to do things that will effectively prosecute the campaign, we’re going to do that”, Carter said. “… I am absolutely prepared to do that”.
