News at Ten’s Tom Bradby shocked after witnessing man’s death in Greece
ITV’s political editor has described with “shock and anger” the moment he tried to save a Greek man from apparently killing himself, while customs officials did nothing.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Bradby said he had “watched an elderly man commit suicide in Greece by driving his vehicle off the harbour wall in Rafina”, a port about 20 miles from central Athens.
Bradby, 48, said only one of “nine or 10” police officers and officials at the scene went into the water to try and rescue him. The rest just watched.
“Dived in, tried to help, couldn’t get him out”.
He added: ‘So much for the Greek holiday trade being business as usual’. Completely shocking.
The suicide rate has skyrocketed in Greece as the economic catastrophe continues to engulf the nation. There was a 35 per cent jump in the number of suicides among the population in less than two years since 2015, according to reports.
Mr Bradby, who is due to begin a new role as the sole presenter of ITV’s News at Ten in the autumn, was hailed a “hero” for his efforts to save the man. He has also established the well-regarded political show The Agenda and wrote the ITV drama The Great Fire.
The father-of-three, a former royal correspondent, won acclaim when he secured the first official interview with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after their engagement.
