Newt Gingrich Out at Fox Thanks to VP Speculation
Shortly after word of his Fox News suspension leaked, Gingrich appeared on the cable net and insisted that he didn’t “know much” about Trump’s VP pick, but hinted an announcement would come “no later than Friday”.
Speculation about Donald Trump’s running mate hit fever pitch Tuesday, as former House speaker Newt Gingrich stepped down from his commentator’s job with Fox News amid talk that he might be the choice, while Trump campaigned with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, another vice presidential possibility.
Jay Wallace, executive vice president of news at Fox, said Tuesday the network thought it was best to stop Gingrich as a contributor to avoid any conflicts of interest. We will have Hillary Clinton, who jeopardized national security and is marred in political scandals yet never faces consequences; Donald Trump, who will be undergoing proceedings for a class action lawsuit against him for fraud; and New Gingrich, a disgraced Speaker of the House. Jeff Sessions and retired Gen. Michael Flynn.
Gingrich would offer Trump a seasoned, if sometimes erratic, politician who has decades of experience in Washington, a reputation of stirring the hornet’s nest, and a long and antagonistic relationship with the Clintons.
Both men, known for their outsize egos and media savvy, have a habit of dominating the media cycle but often creating unforced errors for themselves by going off-script and making controversial statements.
This is not the first time Gingrich has been suspended by Fox: back in 2011, when he was nearing the launch of his own presidential bid in 2012, the network suspended him and fellow 2012 hopeful Rick Santorum.
But the real question is why Fox decided to make this move now, a couple days before Trump announces his pick. This is a huge indicator that Donald Trump will tap Gingrich to be his running mate.
