Newton defiantly defends Super Bowl behavior
Miller has an inside look at Manning’s physical and mental state that the rest of us simply don’t, so it would be neglectful to discount his words, but the idea of Manning coming back instead of taking the opportunity to walk away at the top of the sport doesn’t just seem silly and ill-advised, it feels flat out wrong.
When the Steelers traveled to Denver to face the Broncos in the AFC Divisional round of the 2015 playoffs the Broncos won by the score of 23-26. For example: in four consecutive years he caught over 100 plus passes per season. Taylor, a West Virginia product, also played basketball for Highlands as a student.
Newton, who was selected as the league MVP on Saturday, gave some hope to Panthers fans. The sports media felt Denver would have difficulty containing Newton.
“I was just focused on whether they’d go for two and the defense had to step up and make some stops”, he said in a video posted to TMZSports.
We expect football players to lay everything on the line in critical moments, but there is nothing about Cam Newton’s career that suggests he was afraid of getting hit. Quite frankly, as a Broncos fan, neither did I. There was also the feeling that the Panthers would be able to put the stop to 18-year veteran QB Peyton Manning. Even though he lacked the big plays, Manning did capitalize on scoring opportunities, and obviously Newton struggled to get his team going. Even though he led the team to a 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, he wasn’t around for much of the season due to a tear in his plantar fascia in his left heel. The Carolina quarterback, despite his freakish combination of size and athleticism, has followed the orders of his coaches and become more of a pocket passer, and less prone to freelance all over the field in the type of broken play in which the risk of injury is great.
Coach Rivera on star quarterback’s post-Super Bowl press conference: “Don’t take a snapshot-take the whole album”.
A lot things might have defined Newton’s Super Bowl, the fumbles, the overthrows, the general uncertainty. This league is a great league with or without me. “I fumbled. That’s fine”, Newton said. “He hates to lose and that’s what you love in him. That’s why he’s going to have the time he needs and it’s basically going to be up to him”. “I take pride in that”.
“I’ve been on the record saying that I’m a sore loser”, Newton told reporters at the team’s practice facility in Charlotte on Tuesday. Frustration is always part of being on the losing side, and humility is not an easy characteristic for guys like Newton. I’m not that guy, and I’m happy to say that.
Officially, Budweiser did pay an estimated $15 million for three Super Bowl commercials during the game, according to MarketWatch, including the more memorable one with Oscar-winning British actress Helen Mirren that has been viewed 5 million times on YouTube.
