Newton did not need to leave game after hit by Broncos
The league said the hit did not merit Newton’s removal from the game.
Three of the hits were of the helmet-to-helmet variety but none resulted in any penalty yardage. At the last second, we jetted to my father’s house to watch the game but had to leave all of the delicious food we had planned to make at home. He did not get checked for a concussion.
I was a little nervous when the National Football League scheduled a rematch of the Super Bowl as the season’s opener, but as the clock ticked down to game time, I realized I wasn’t nervous about the outcome of the game at all.
And Newton, at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, is a super-sized running back much of the time, ducking his head just like any other running back slicing his way through the line.
Cecil Newton is none too happy about what he saw in the NFL Opener – Carolina v Denver. “I just took the shot, man”.
“The thing that we didn’t do and needed to do better, we should have shut the run down and forced the guy to win the game”. Because of his size, speed, and athletic ability, it is believed that he is often not given the same protection by officials as other quarterbacks.
Newton remained in the game after the hit from Denver’s Darian Stewart and led the Panthers into field goal range, but Graham Gano missed a 50-yard attempt in Denver’s 21-20 victory. As football coaches love to point out, the film never lies. As Newton released the ball and was going down, Stewart hit him in the head with the crown of his helmet.
But the issue was raised, at least, during Newton’s postgame news conference. He had his reasons. That puts him ahead of former Panther Jeremy Shockey (547) for seventh all-time for receptions by a tight end. Speaking to ESPN’s Jim Trotter after the game, Cecil Newton ripped into the league and the officiating crew and even began to wonder if there was a bias against his son. The only call after this one, in the final minute of the game, was intentional grounding (!).
“If anything happens in the game that looks questionable, our doctor and the independent come together and they go and look at it immediately on instant replay”. If the ATC spotter or UNC sees a hit that looks unsafe or a player that looks disoriented, he or she reports their findings to the head medical trainer. In fact, it’s three country miles removed from fair. Keeping up with coaches, guys like Bruce Arians who coached me in Indianapolis, Jim Caldwell.
A great one, too.
The Broncos walloped several of the game’s elite QBs on the way to their title last season, holding Aaron Rodgers to the worst performance of his career and putting the hurt on Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady and Newton in the playoffs. It’ll worsen considerably without the league taking action after its 2016 debut was marred by the type of unsafe hits that are now endangering the sport.
One play in particular is raising concerns about the NFL’s concussion protocol. “None of them felt that he was under duress at that time and they allowed him to continue”.
After speaking with Manning a day earlier – mostly about the retiree’s latest amusing commercials – Siemian became the first QB to start for a Super Bowl champion without ever having thrown a pass as a pro. “I think everything is going to be fine”. “They say they examined the player from the sidelines, no one got in his face and administered the concussion test”.
“I’m going to wait until I see the tape”, Rivera said when asked about the hits Newton absorbed. I’m not going to stop being aggressive.
He was talking about the officials. On the play, Carolina put on a ferocious rush. Why didn’t Rivera send in the backup, Derek Anderson, and try his luck against the Broncos the next time they meet up in the Super Bowl?
Kubiak said leading up to the game that he wanted his players to play with emotion.
Overall, the Carolina Panthers didn’t record their best effort.
