Next Google Pixel Could Have Curved Screen
It’s probably a no-brainer for Google to keep using OLED tech in the Pixel 2 this year.
In a bid to help South Korea’s LG Display Co Ltd. splurge production of its organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens for smartphones, Google Inc has extended its offer to invest at least KRW 1 trillion. Apple has already signed up Samsung to supply OLED panels for the yet to be announced iPhone 8.
The OLED display market is expected to see a massive spike in demand, with rumours that Apple is working on an OLED-equipped iPhone. Samsung has already featured it in their smartphones with much success and now Apple’s other major rival, Google, also seems to be entering the race. Lastly, seeing as the Pixel was released nearly half a year ago, it’s safe to say that Google is now underway in prototyping a potential successor. This is likely behind Google’s decision to approach LG rather than the market leader. According to the latest information from ET News, Pixel 2 should also have curved edges.
LG Display’s plastic OLED technology for smartphones “enables the differentiated design values such as bendable, foldable and rollable”.
This morning, etnews is reporting that Google has offered or is at least very interested in investing close to $1 billion toward LG Display facilities that make flexible OLED displays.
Google Pixel 2 smartphones will come in three different form factors, according to some reports.
A recent Slashgear report has studied the possible SoC that Google would utilize for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
Google unveiled its first generation of Pixel phones at the end of 2016.
The Pixel was arguably the best Android handset avaialble at the beginning of the year, but it looks like Samsung might have stolen that title with the new Galaxy S8. Google CEO Sundar Pichai (pictured above) described the Pixel and Pixel XL as ushering in an era for mobile devices led by artificial intelligence.
