Next year’s College Football Playoff committee will be without Osborne
ESPN tells news “Noon ET: College Football Playoff Selection Day show on ESPN/WatchESPN”.
In this exercise, let’s say that the top eight teams in the country would all make the eight-team Playoff.
Likewise, North Carolina – the longest of long shots still in contention for a Playoff berth at No. 10 – will have reason to steal glimpses at the scoreboard in Charlotte. It makes for one of Clemson’s more-impressive wins of the season and gives the Tigers three wins over current top-10 teams.
Consensus: In. Clemson is a safe bet to make the playoff.
The winners will play for the national championship on January 11 in Glendale, Arizona.
Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley had one of the most impressive grabs of the day with this catch in the SEC title game vs. Florida. “The ultimate motivation right now is winning a national championship”. Last week, the Florida Gators disappointed by putting up a measly two points against the Florida State Seminoles. Alabama’s wins over Charleston Southern and Auburn came the same weekends as Oklahoma’s wins over TCU and Oklahoma State, and the committee didn’t budge on the Tide at No. 2. The Hawkeyes did not play a terribly hard schedule, but they beat every opponent they had and now need a Big 10 title to make the CFP. Without a conference title game, Oklahoma couldn’t do anything to bolster its case this week, while other teams are much fresher in the committee’s mind. USC, on the other hand, has four losses this season. Could a seven or eight-seed end up winning it all? If you included all these teams, you would have effectively rendered the Big Ten title game irrelevant. But at 9 am PST, on ESPN, the CFP will rank Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma and announce if they are heading to the Cotton or Orange Bowls. The Spartans have a future National Football League quarterback in Connor Cook, and their defense is championship-caliber. The Cardinal have two losses compared to Michigan State’s one, but there is a chance, albeit slight, that the committee could put Stanford in based on its overall body of work. And Michigan State’s stunning victory in Columbus. It’s hard to fathom a situation in which Stanford supplants a one-loss Big Ten or Big 12 champion for a spot in the CFP. But barring players sneaking peeks at the Levi’s Stadium jumbotron, none will know their Playoff fate until sometime after the final whistle in the Bay Area. It is hard to defeat a team twice in a season, but I think Stanford will just do that and keep their Playoff hopes alive. This meeting between the teams in Atlanta does not appear to be a favorable matchup for Florida, since Jim McElwain’s offense did not score last weekend versus FSU. Ohio State would have needed a lot of chaos to secure a playoff berth.
