Neymar Shines as Barcelona Completes the Biggest Comeback in Champions League History
Barcelona have completed the greatest comeback in football history to advance in the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
In the aftermath of their humiliating loss in Paris, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique had announced he wouldn’t be renewing his contract in the summer and his side trotted out in a 3-3-4 formation which was meant to attack from the very first minute. Running onto an over the top through ball, Suarez screamed and threw himself to the ground after a PSG player had the audacity to touch him as they both competed for the falling ball. It got better in the second, but when we conceded the third goal we realised we had to play.
“I want to apologise to the fans”, said midfielder Marco Verratti, who had been instrumental in the first leg but was a pale shadow of his brilliant self in the Nou Camp.
But with PSG having secured a precious away goal just 12 minutes later, Barcelona made a halfhearted attempt at a comeback.
“It is a hard night to explain with words”, said Barca boss Luis Enrique, who will leave the club at the end of the season.
Perhaps ominously, PSG’s Qatari president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, said: “There can be no excuses, we did not play in the first half. Individually, we missed out on a good opportunity to grow”, Emery told PSG website.
The Brazilian, who hadn’t had much joy up until that point, then grabbed another goal from the penalty spot in the 91st minute to draw Barca level at 5-5 and set up the exhilarating storybook finale.
“We were prepared for all this. The fans were like 10 extra players and in the end this is all for them”.
“This is the best match of my career”, Neymar said.
Such was the quality of the 25-year-old’s performance that Steven Gerrard described it as one of the best he’s ever seen in the BT Sport studio.
Barcelona were handed two penalties against PSG on Wednesday night and to put it mildly, both were very unusual.
The five-time European champions scored 13 goals in the three matches since Luis Enrique made the switch to three defenders, four midfielders and three forwards. They went 6-1 over Sporting Gijon and 5-0 over Celta Vigo. “I am curious to see the game repeated, calmly, when I have time” he added.
But on Wednesday a dramatic finish with three goals in the last seven minutes and a 95th-minute victor from late substitute Sergi Roberto made history as the pre-quarterfinal ended 6-5 on aggregate, Xinhua news agency reported. His decision making and showboating can often be frustrating to watch. PSG settled a little after the early scare and Barcelona became increasingly jumpy as the first-half clock ticked down without a second goal.
