NFC championship game: Green Bay Packers v Atlanta Falcons
The Packers have a great group of receivers, and that depth has shown over the past two games.
The Falcons’ offense has been just about unstoppable at home, no matter whom they’ve played.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has become famous for completing epic Hail Mary passes in big games, including one a couple weeks ago against the New York Giants to close out the first half.
Dallas was reminded last Sunday of how risky Rodgers can be. It may also be advised to not leave any time on the clock for Rodgers, who is a magician when under pressure.
But since their Week 10 loss to the Cowboys, in which they allowed a season-high 35 points, the Steelers have won nine in a row. Green Bay’s dramatic upset of the top-seeded Dallas Cowboys ensured one more game would be played at the 70,000-seat stadium with the big top-like roof.
But hold on, the Falcons have the probable NFL MVP on their side. Ryan’s postseason completion percentage, albeit in one game, is 70.3.
Both quarterbacks have a number of options.
Brady gets the ball out of his hand quickly and finds his receivers with pinpoint accuracy on intermediate passes. Receivers Davante Adams (ankle) and Geronimo Allison (hamstring) are also ailing and McCarthy said Friday that all three players are game-day decisions. Will they play, and if they do how effective can they be if not 100 percent? Though the Devonta Freeman-Tevin Coleman combination may not be comparable to Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott (who rushed 22 times for 125 yards last Sunday), it’s still better than Green Bay, which ranked 20th in rushing yards and 20th in rushing scores this season. The way to combat that is you’ve got to start strong and then push through the response.
It’d be hard for these two teams to play a more entertaining game than last week’s contest between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys, but they might come close.
That being said, Sunday will be the final game in the history of the Georgia Dome. Only one team – New Orleans – gave up more yards through the air in the regular season, and the Packers’ prospects of slowing down Ryan and company have only been damaged further by a quad injury to safety Morgan Burnett, whose versatility has been such an asset. It was the third third down of the drive with catches by Julio Jones and Sanu.
Rodgers has been the catalyst behind the Packers surge. This game being in the Georgia Dome is a huge advantage for Atlanta. Which quarterback makes mistakes? Figuring out a victor could simply come down to that. That means nothing, because the Falcons are going to take care of business, but the line in Vegas, which has fluctuated greatly, is intriguing.
MATTHEWS VS. MATTHEWS: Keep an eye on the family matchup between Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews and Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews.
But it’s the Falcons.
