NFL 49ers Fire Aldon Smith Following Fifth Arrest
According to police, Smith was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on Thursday.
Smith, a first-round draft pick in 2011, has now been arrested three times for drunken driving since leaving the University of Missouri and has had several brushes with the law.
An emotional 49ers coach Jim Tomsula told a press conference the club would try to help Smith fight his demons despite cutting him from the franchise. “And, I think, the best thing of it all is that he has the support needed here, even though he’s no longer a member of the team”.
Smith missed time during the 2013 season to undergo treatment at an inpatient facility following his DUI arrest on September 20, 2013. After an investigation, police charged him with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, those charges were reduced to misdemeanors. According to the Santa Clara Police Department, Smith was arrested for hit and run, DUI and vandalism.
Last fall, Smith received a nine-game suspension for what the league called violations of its substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies.
Smith argued that his fans and friends will remain faithful to him.
Hopefully Smith can get the help that he needs and move onto a successful life, whether or not that involves the NFL. In his four years with the 49ers, Smith became one of the NFL’s top pass rushers. Smith displayed signs of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage so officials administered a file sobriety test. Two years after a DUI arrest made headlines, he was arrested again on a DUI charge. “This has nothing to do with football”, Tomsula told reporters.
CBS Sports’ John Breech recently reported that Niners’ star quarterback Colin Kaepernick had an “on-field” argument with Smith during training camp, which may have contributed to the behavior of the Mississippi native and his eventual arrest on Thursday.
Tomsula said he spoke to Smith personally, but declined to share the conversation. “Go get it. You’re worth it. There’s value in every human being”. I didn’t get help until after I was done with football.
“Aldon’s like any young player, he’s growing up, he’s maturing”. He caused further damage to the parked vehicle with his auto door upon exiting the auto and proceeded to leave the area.
In 2014 he was involved in an incident at Los Angeles worldwide Airport after he was randomly selected for a secondary screening. He totaled 14 sacks in his rookie season and 19.5 sacks in his second year. I understand where this goes on the news. “You see that with a lot of these guys”, Baalke said.
He registered just 15 tackles and two sacks in seven games in 2014.
