NFL Combine: Cal QB Goff measures up … barely
Two quarterbacks, each of whom could go in the Top 10 …
You’ll never hear more fuss about hand size than you do at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Goff’s not alone in lacking ideal hand size. Russell Wilson’s 5-10 ½, but he’s got 10 ¼ hands.
One of the knocks against Goff had been the size of his hands, and those suspicions were confirmed at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday when they were measured at 9 inches, which is right on the cusp of being small for NFL quarterbacks. That’s considered small by National Football League standards.
“I’m not big on speculating about that”, Wentz said when asked his response to Goff’s boast.
“I always have a chip on my shoulder and I always want to go out there and prove people wrong, prove people right, whatever it is”, Goff said on Thursday. “I’ve been told I have pretty big hands my whole life”.
Unless, of course, teams believe this insane rumor going around about his comically small hands. We had a lot of leaders on that team, we had 22 seniors, I believe, we had the leadership council, like I said. Meanwhile, analyst and former Texans and Redskins general manager Charlie Casserly says Goff is the best all-around player among all the quarterbacks available. North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz had a good week at the Senior Bowl last month and now hopes to continue his momentum this week at the combine. “I don’t really pay a ton of attention to the other guys. So you do some homework and you find out he’s 6’5”, 235, and I put the second tape in hoping it would be as good as the first, and it was better. “I’m confident I’ll be the best quarterback in the draft”. All the opinions only really matter for… you guys all have fun stuff to write about. Both Cincinnati Bengals starting safeties – Reggie Nelson and George Iloka – are scheduled to be free agents, and it’s expected to be hard for the team to retain both. There are no guarantees in free agency. And he’s going to have a chance to meet with teams and show them his football IQ. Ezekiel Elliot spoke as well on Thursday.
Q. Assuming the Browns go quarterback at No. 2, they’ve got so many other needs, obviously receiver, O-line, linebackers and defensive backs, could you just give a quick snapshot of the depth thing or lack thereof in each position group and maybe what you think would make sense for them at No. 32? “I don’t think that will be a problem for Jared, but it’s something you do look at”.
So you start doing homework on the kids, and yeah, he’s only got 23 starts. You can evaluate how much they know, but you can’t evaluate how they process it in 30 seconds or less.
In 2015, Winston and Mariota were the first two quarterbacks drafted – they were selected with the first two picks. If a quarterback is a statue in the pocket, he better have some big hands and a history of production in college. Many expected the team to take a run at Robert Griffin III – who owner Jerry Jones had gushed about in the past – but now many including 247Sports are reporting that Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Lineman is “not a fan” of Griffin.
