NFL committee picks combined site over Rams’ bid
The NFL owners were scheduled to meet to discuss the Los Angeles topic in Houston, Tuesday.
The vote came after the Committee on Los Angeles Opportunities, made up of six of the more influential team owners, separately voted 5-1 in favor of the rival Carson stadium plan put forth by both the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. In turn, the ruling on the possibilities of a relocation are down to the Rams and San Diego Chargers making the move to Inglewood or the Chargers and Oakland Raiders transitioning to Carson, California.
The new stadium is set to open in 2019 with the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and the Los Angeles Coliseum as potential temporary fill-in options for the Rams.
According to Chargers Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos, his fellow owners could approve either the Carson or Inglewood sites “and it could be that neither site is approved”.
If you’re from the city of Los Angeles and thirsty for the Oakland Raiders to move to your city, don’t shoot the messenger! Whatever it recommends will no doubt sway some of the owners not involved in the process.
Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reported the latest word on the upcoming vote.
Reports indicate that on the first round of voting, a proposal which would send the Rams and a team “to be determined” to Stan Kroenke’s Inglewood stadium received 20 votes, four short of the required number. It’s possible the San Diego Chargers may join the Rams.
All three cities have tried to make their cases with the National Football League, and each team recently submitted a formal relocation bid.
Spanos’ partner in the proposal, Raiders owner Mark Davis, adds what one source referred to as “negative leverage”.
It “looks” like the Raiders and Chargers will be sharing a stadium in L.A. Though, this could change depending on the owners’ votes. Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was the lone dissenter.
The other project on the table was a stadium in Inglewood, presented by the St. Louis Rams. The Rams then played at Anaheim Stadium from 1980-1994 before moving to St. Louis in 1995.
It’s a strong recommendation by the influential committee, which includes Texans owner Bob McNair.
