NFL Relocation Rumors: Committees Have Decided Team(s) They Will Recommend
FILE – In this May 19, 2015, file photo, a photo of St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, left, is held up by Rams fans as they rally with San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders fans outside of the NFL’s spring football meetings in San Francisco.
Goodell pointed out that city leaders in Oakland, St. Louis and San Diego agree that the existing stadiums don’t work.
Chris Melvin, San Diego’s lead negotiator with the San Diego Chargers blamed the team, alleging the Chargers “created their own uncertainty” when it comes to a new stadium”. If the Rams are allowed to return, the historic Coliseum seems likely to be the Rams’ temporary home again for two or three seasons until Kroenke builds his $1.86 billion stadium complex in Inglewood.
Rams owner Stan Kroenke has offered a 50/50 equity partner deal with either the Chargers or Raiders, but Jones is now stepping up in proposing a deal between the Chargers and Rams specifically. Owners said Goodell had been pushing toward this for months.
“Regardless of location, a Rams-Chargers combo platter would leave the Raiders out in the cold”.
On Friday, Melvin emailed Eric Grubman, the NFL’s point man on Los Angeles, to say that he had heard nothing back on his request to Mark Fabiani, who represents Spanos. And they would be leaving a stadium that is widely considered one of the league’s worst.
“These (owners) are significantly wealthy individuals who are adept business people, and ultimately to me the decision is going to be reached as to what is best for the National Football League – not necessarily what might be best for one or all three of the teams”.
However, Georgia Frontiere, a former chorus girl whose sixth husband was then Rams owner Carrol Rosenbloom, inherited the team when Rosenbloom mysteriously drowned in 1979.
Both Los Angeles proposals are expected to be financed privately without relying on major subsidies.
Even those closest to the process don’t know which team will win the right to move to the country’s second-largest market.
But league staff and several influential owners have cooled on the St. Louis proposal in recent weeks.
At the meeting, the simplest outcome would have 24 of 32 owners voting to approve either the relocation of the St. Louis Rams to Inglewood, where they are ready to start construction on a $1.9 billion stadium and performing arts venue.
The studies “demonstrate that Los Angeles is a strong market with great opportunity, while St. Louis is a market that will in all likelihood be unable to sustain three professional sports teams”, the application said. They also met with the backers of each project.
“We have not seen the report, nor do we expect to, as that would be a matter between the league office and team owners”, the St. Louis task force said in a statement.
The application said attendance at Rams games is well below the league average despite Kroenke’s “significant investments” since taking control in 2010.
