NFL’s 49ers release Aldon Smith after DUI arrest: team statement
Certainly for the next few weeks. We thought he was ready to realize his true potential.
It was sadly inevitable. And there was no fight.
“It’s a sad day”, Tomsula said during an emotional news conference.
“It’s tough. That guy might be the best pass-rusher in the league, but, like I said, it’s more than about football right now”, chimed in free safety Eric Reid. And there wasn’t. “People stumble”, Tomsula said. “Don t know where that could even come from”.
Apparently, the coach has never met everybody’s unimpeachable source, Mr. Twitter.
That’s hardly the most salacious part of the story, however, as numerous gossip outlets are claiming the vehicle Smith damaged belongs to teammate Colin Kaepernick and was revenge for the quarterback’s dalliance with Smith’s ex-girlfriend Nessa, a hip-hop DJ for HOT 97 in New York. Both were first-round NFL draft picks. But so what and who cares?
“He has been turning his life around”. According to the officers, the player showed “objective symptoms of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage”. In addition, Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith, and Anthony Davis all announced their intentions to retire, and will not be continuing their football careers this upcoming season.
Smith’s exit does not make the task easier.
Baalke said he has not fielded calls from any other team about whether it should sign Smith, who collected 42 sacks in his first 43 games before last season. He says Smith has been working hard to kick a number of problems he’s had.
“Hopefully he gets some help”, safety Antoine Bethea added. It always does. Head coach Tomsula weighed in on Smith’s progress by saying, “He has been turning his life around, he is in that process”.
San Francisco – The San Francisco 49ers decided on Friday to finally release linebacker Aldon Smith, after his fifth run in with the law. After Smith refused to take responsibility for his arrest, Baalke made the decision to release the linebacker. “Nothing even close”, Tomsula said. I’m just more comfortable, to be honest with you. That speculation, while very premature, is warranted based on his talent and the fact that several teams, including the Oakland Raiders, could use a player of Smith’s on the field abilities.
“We’ll continue to communicate with him and, from an organizational standpoint, do anything we can to help him”. The two men should talk about that.
The 49ers caught a small break throughout the ordeal, as Smith’s restructured $9.75 million contract was not fully guaranteed upfront, rather it would have been paid throughout the season. It could be that Tomsula means what he says.
Asked why Baalke didn’t speak with reporters Friday, Tomsula replied: “That s my job”. To me, the answer’s always in you. That’s been made very clear to the team.
Smith had said when camp began he was healthy and in great shape, ready to go..
Frankly, I wondered if he and the franchise would back up those words. When officers arrived, they discovered Smith had earlier collided with another parked vehicle as he was attempting to park his own. The players will notice.
