NFL star refuses ‘participation trophies’ for 2 sons
Participation trophies. Questions have been raised whether or not kids should get them.
When the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker learnt his two sons, aged eight and six, had been awarded “best of the batch” trophies for their athletic endeavours, he promptly confiscated the awards.
Harrison wrote, ” I came home to find out that my boys received two trophies for nothing, participation trophies! The post said Harrison ordered that they be sent back until they won a “real trophy”.
The story of James Harrison’s journey to greatness is a true “rags to riches” tale.
Most of the almost 900 Instagram commenters praised Harrison’s parenting. Are we helping our children by sparing their feelings?
It shows their kid got involved and someone recognised that they did their best. Now, he attempts to teach his two sons the same lesson in a unique way. Harrison added that he will return the trophies until his sons earn “real” ones. He’s been a force of nature throughout his NFL career, earning two Super Bowl rings, five All-Pro appearances, and is entering his 14th grueling professional season. Let’s stop giving participation trophies and use the savings to reduce the fees for playing.
Asked about the trophies while walking off the field yesterday, Harrison said, “they’ve already gone back”, then went to sign autographs. “You can receive anything – award. money. fame. negative. reviews…anything at all, and the only thing that matters is knowing who you are”.
Commenting on the Instagram post, Joyanne4 said: ” You NEVER know what the future holds.
The kids probably aren’t a fan of their father’s decision but I think it will pay off in the long run.
Still, not all commenters were happy with Harrison’s stance with one calling him a “musclehead jerk” for confiscating the participation trophies.
