NFL Suspends 49ers’ Jerome Simpson For Six Games
Simpson (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) can continue to practice with the 49ers and play in their four exhibitions.
“We are in full support of the NFL ” s decision, and look forward to Jerome ” s future contributions to our organisation”.
With Simpson’s legal issues – he was cut by the Minnesota Vikings while serving a three-game suspension for reckless driving last September after it was revealed he had been arrested two months earlier “for misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession, driving with an open bottle and violating limited license restrictions after he was pulled over” – the Niners assumed he would be facing some league-mandated suspension.
With Simpson suspended, he will not count against the 53-man roster for the 49ers and would be eligible to return after Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens.
“I’m just blessed to be with this organization and people that stand behind me”, Simpson said. The announcement comes as no surprise to the 49ers front office, who had been expecting a suspension to be handed down when they signed him this offseason. Hopefully that changes now that Simpson will be out of the picture for a chunk of time, because I sure would like to see more from this quick, tough, and fluid wide receiver. Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington were drafted by the 49ers in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
“But the coaches here, ownership, they believed in me”, he said.
“I looked at the schedule, and it’s a good game to come back, the Seahawks game”. I just put everything on the table and told the truth.
The current suspension presumably is related to last year’s incident.
Colin Kaepernick has shown a strong rapport on the field with Simpson, whose speed the quarterback compared to Smith’s.
Head coach Jim Tomsula and offensive coordinator Geep Chryst seeks to develop a more balanced approach to this year’s offense and capitalize on the field stretching ability from their newest deep-threat, Torrey Smith.
Simpson, 29, is no stranger to the NFL’s discipline department. He was also suspended for three games at the start of the 2012 season as a result of a September 2011 marijuana trafficking arrest.
The 49ers signed Simpson in March to a two-year, $1.7 million contract, albeit with no guaranteed money and a $745,000 salary this season, according to spotrac.com.
Other reporters saw defensive tackle Tank Carradine need to be restrained from going after an unspecified teammate on the sideline.
Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey did not practice because of an undisclosed muscle strain.
