NFL Suspends Giants Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. For 1 Game
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will watch Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles from somewhere other than the sideline after his childish antics this past weekend forced the National Football League to suspend him for one game.
Beckham was penalised three-times for personal fouls against Norman, one of the National Football League’s top cornerbacks who drew the assignment of covering him in Carolina’s 38-35 victory that kept the Panthers unbeaten with a 14-0 record.
Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that a one-game suspension is likely to come down against Beckham.
Yesterday’s Panthers-Giants game was centered on the all-star matchup between wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and cornerback Josh Norman – just not the way most people envisioned. Beckham was called for unnecessary roughness twice and Norman thought that Beckham should have been ejected from the game.
But this is also the fourth time Beckham has been fined in his short career for violent acts or temper tantrums.
Beckham, who dropped a certain touchdown pass on the opening series, refused to discuss his run-in with Norman, skirting the questions by saying the loss was unfortunate.
Asked about the personal fouls, he said, “You never want to hurt your team like that”. The most glaring incident came in the third quarter, when Beckham slammed his helmet into the side of Norman’s. Or, as Cam Newton said later: “You got a field full of alpha males, they’re not going to be playing “Patty cake, Patty cake” out there”.
Coughlin said he considered benching Beckham during the game but decided against it, per Jordan Raanan of NJ Advance Media: “He’s got to learn at some point how to deal with some things on the field”. I think we can all agree when you think Coughlin, you think integrity and discipline.
Without Beckham, the Giants (6-8) would be missing their best offensive weapon as they try to stay alive in the NFC East race. “He made some mistakes today, but I’m hoping he’ll recognize that and get over it”. “How can you respect a guy like that, that was ridiculous”, he said.
Norman wasn’t exactly an angel either as he instigated the violent play by aggressively pushing his hands under Beckham’s facemask when attempting to jam the speedy wideout at the line of scrimmage and shoving him after the whistle.
