NFL to review Panthers’ medical handling of Newton hit
“That’s who he is”, Rivera said.
Officials from the Carolina Panthers told ESPN that Newton was questioned four times to ensure that he had no residual effects from the hits he took on Thursday and declared that he passed the concussion tests given to him. Had he been taken into the locker room for a more comprehensive check, Newton would have missed the rest of the game.
Newton did endure many hard, illegal hits on Thursday night, and his experience was similar to the one endured by Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC Championship Game.
Now the NFL and NFL Players Association are investigating the response by medical personnel during the game.
The release also stated that during stoppage in action the play was reviewed and medical officials determined “there were no indications of a concussion that would require further evaluation and the removal of the player from the game”.
Stewart said after the game he felt as if he led with his shoulder, not his head. He said, ‘Yeah, I’m good, I’m good. “We were talking about one the protections and he reminded me about something we talked about earlier in the week (in practice), so I thought he was fine”.
Under new league rules, teams that don’t follow the correct protocol for concussions could be subject to penalties including fines or even a loss of draft picks. Sep.
People in Detroit are still furious about the call Rodgers got last season when Lions’ defensive end Devin Taylor grazed his helmet on what should have been the last play of the game, which would have given the Lions a win. “I’m proud to say I have not added to that analysis”.
Newton received several helmet-to-helmet blows during the Panthers’ season-opening loss Thursday. Neither did the officials on the field or in the replay booth.
“If there is a penalty, then throw a flag – that is very simple”, Olsen said.
Two Denver players – linebacker Brandon Marshall and receiver Jordan Norwood – left the game in the first half to be evaluated for possible concussions.
The Broncos defeated the Panthers in Denver 21-20.
“It’s insulting”, Olsen said.
At 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, Newton absorbs more punishment than the typical QB, in part because he runs the ball a fair amount. “And he’s not. He’s a quarterback, who happens to big and fast and strong”.
Rivera’s update on Newton comes just days after he claimed that several of the hits on him should have been penalized and that he planned to send them to the league office for review. “There is a protocol”, Rivera said. “I appreciate the fact that they listen”. Maybe we - fans and people like me who pay our bills, in part, because of this sport - aren’t cogs in a system that encourages young men to do disgusting things to themselves for the sake of our entertainment.
