NH Newspaper Publisher: Christie Told Me He Would Never Endorse Trump
Throwing his weight behind the Republican frontrunner, Gov. Chris Christie said he wanted to endorse the person who had the best chance of beating Democrat candidate front-runner Hillary Clinton in the U.S. presidential election on November 8. Other Republicans tried to be more optimistic.
“I would prefer not to get into this situation where we’re attacking one another”, he told George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America”, but the perception of Trump as an “invincible force” has persuaded him to change his strategy. “REALLY FREAKED OUT” Privately, lobbyists, economists, and analysts expressed deep concern about having Trump, who has proposed building a wall along the southern USA border and banning Muslims from the country, as the face of the party.
“Desperate people do desperate things”, Christie said.
By backing Trump, Christie became first major party figure – and someone considered a moderate Republican – to endorse the real estate magnate.
Mr Rubio, still viewed as the most viable anti-Trump candidate, has based his presidential ambitions around a victory in Florida, which will vote on March 15. “We’ll cross these bridges when we get to it”, Ryan said.
“I’m not sure if you can be surprised by anything these days as it relates to the elections”, said UW-Green Bay political science professor Scott Furlong. Asked if Trump’s campaign would work harder to win establishment endorsements as he got closer to the nomination, Lewandowski pointed to former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, an early establishment favorite who quit the race on Saturday.
This represents a substantial increase from a week ago, before the SC primary and Nevada caucus, when 71% said Trump would be the nominee – of which 36% thought this result was “very likely”. Collins has no plans to make an endorsement, a spokeswoman said.
