NHS Choir beats Justin Bieber to the Number One Spot
The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir, featuring physiotherapists, porters and administrators as well as doctors and nurses, just upset Justin Bieber’s Love Yourself for the number one Christmas song in the UK.
The Canadian singer will have to be content with three tracks in the top five, but is unlikely to be disappointed to miss out on the top spot after urging his fans to back the charity choir.
“A Bridge Over You” sold 127,000 copies, beating Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” by 30,000 with a little help from the Biebs himself.
‘It’s a brilliant celebration for the NHS across the country so well done and thank you everyone for downloading and streaming.
Harriet Nerva, a junior doctor in the choir, made a decision to start a social media campaign to get the song to number one after a particularly tough day at work.
“Thank you SO very much to all our followers and supporters”. Let’s do the right thing & help them win.
And the NHS Choir are absolutely thrilled with the news!
Proceeds from the song – a mash-up of Coldplay’s Fix You and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water – will go to Carers UK and Mind.
“I’m hearing this U.K. Christmas race is close…but the [NHS Choir] single is for charity”, Bieber had tweeted on Wednesday. It’s Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck.
‘What a fantastic result for the NHS Choir to claim the 2015 Christmas Number 1, ‘ he said. “There couldn’t be a more deserving group of winners”.
Adele’s album 25 became the bestselling album of Christmas 2015 and she also had a single in the fourth spot in the singles chart.
