NHS Choir beats Justin Bieber to UK X-mas no.1
A choir of doctors and nurses beat Justin Bieber to the Christmas No. 1 spot in Britain’s pop music chart Friday after he urged his fans to buy their song.
The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir’s single “A Bridge Over You” was just several hundred sales behind Bieber’s “Love Yourself“.
They beat their closest rival, Justin Bieber, to top spot by almost 31,000 sales.
Commenting on their success, the choir said, “it is a brilliant celebration for the NHS across the country, so well done and thank you everyone”.
‘We are absolutely overwhelmed and couldn’t be any happier, ‘ they said.
NHS Choir began trending after Bieber’s declaration of support and bookmakers started suspending betting.
All proceeds from the single will go to a selection of charities, including Carers UK and Mind.
They continued: “A massive cheer for the NHS, thank you!”
Bieber’s Love Yourself remains the No 1 song in New Zealand, but is No 4 in the US.
So for one week it’s OK not to be number one.
A Bridge Over You, originally recorded in 2013, is a fusion of Coldplay and Simon and Garfunkel songs.
He added: “There couldn’t be a more deserving group of winners”.
And while many were humbled by Justin’s gesture, it appears Kate wasn’t sold on the sentiment as the race heats up for the coveted number one spot.
The singer has scored the biggest selling album of Christmas week for 2015.
Her cover of Bob Dylan’s Forever Young dropped three places since entering the chart last week – meaning it is likely to be the first X Factor winner’s single to fail to reach the top spot.
Martin Talbot, Chief Executive of the Official Charts Company, said: ‘As well as climaxing on Christmas Day for just the fourth time in history, this year’s race for the festive Number One is looking like one of the closest ever.
