Nick Krygios Fined For Sledging Stan Wawrinka; Swiss Netter
Australian Nick Kyrgios has been fined $10,000 and may face further punishment for the insulting comment he directed at Swiss Stan Wawrinka during a match at the Rogers Cup, the ATP said on Thursday.
The men’s governing body, though, “is still reviewing” the incident “and additional penalties may be forthcoming”, an ATP spokesman said in an email sent to CNN.com. “Sorry to tell you that mate” – a reference to his Australian Davis Cup teammate Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Wawrinka appeared to not hear Kyrgios’ comment at the time, but unleashed after the match.
Wawrinka earlier said: “What was said I wouldn’t say to my worst enemy”. He also refused to stop play until the tournament director came out at Wimbledon and slammed his racket so hard off the grass that it bounced into the crowd.
Kyrgios was back in court later on Thursday and was booed before and after his third round match against John Isner of the United States.
Novak Djokovic racked up his 50th win of 2015 to reach the Montreal Masters last eight and then blasted Nick Kyrgios for the crude sexual slur at Stan Wawrinka which has rocked the sport.
Teenage Croatian player Donna Vekic, 19, has been linked to Wawrinka since he divorced his wife Ilham in April.
Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios has been fined £6,400 after telling Stanislas Wawrinka how a fellow pro player had slept with the Swiss playe’rs girlfiend. He stated that his comments were during the “heat of the moment“.
Speaking on court after the match Nick Kyrgios claimed he had been provoked, saying: “He was getting a bit lippy with me”.
“Obviously I apologized in public, and privately, as well”. But yeah, I don’t really know. Doesn’t the ATP know how much he makes? “I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened”, Kyrgios wrote.
Masur said Kyrgios seemed to be talking to himself rather than to Wawrinka, who was on the opposite side of the court, waiting to return the next serve.
At first Kyrgios brushed the controversy aside in his post-match press conference. The 19-year-old has posted to social media about Wawrinka, furthering suggestions the two are dating.
Sure, Kyrgios has fans that can look past his behavior, but there are many tennis fans who wouldn’t be upset at all to see him go.
Although Kyrgios won the match after his opponent was forced to withdraw with a back injury in the third set trailing 6-7, 6-3, 4-0, his behaviour has since been strongly criticized with some even calling for the 20-year-old to be handed a suspension for his latest error of judgement.
