It reflects the progress on its Australian and ATP rankings, where it rose by 14 positions compared to a year ago and now occupies 16th place.
Tomic, who comes into this tie against Slovakia with an outstanding Davis Cup record of 16 wins and four losses, has had a busy hardcourt season, and apart from the grand slam failure was in solid form.
But Davis Cup will always be in Tomic’s schedule in the next years as well.
Friday starts the Davis Cup matches in one of the 21-year-old Australian nick kyrgios play with 26-year-old Slovak Andrew Martin.
No place like home: Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt with team members Nick Kyrgios, Sam Groth, John Peers and Bernard Tomic at Circular Quay.
Australia has 28 Davis Cup wins in total, second only to the United States (32), but last won the title in 2003 when Hewitt was the star of a team including Mark Philippoussis, Todd Woodbridge and Wayne Arthurs that defeated Spain in the final.
“That’s why I think as a team they’ll be stronger next year and in years to come”.
Nick Kyrgios has recovered from a hip injury and apparently buried the hatchet with Bernard Tomic after he was named in Australia’s Davis Cup team to play Slovakia today. “I’ve been practising a lot and I’ve been hitting them well and there’s no signs that indicate that I wouldn’t be healthy to play”, Kyrgios said.
“So it just shows how close we are”.
“I know how much Davis Cup means to everyone in our team and everyone in our squad as well”. Both Slovakian players are outside the top 100.
Making his first Davis Cup appearance since a forgettable performance in last year’s quarter-final win over Kazakhstan in Darwin, Kyrgios was more inconvenienced by a nose bleed than his lowly-ranked opponent. “I’ve hardly lost any matches at it so I’m enjoying the moment to be here this week and I hope I can win some more matches”. He plays less tournaments and plays really well at them as opposed to me.
“I think as you get to that point where I am – top 20, top 25 – you have to play less tournaments and be really focused and fit for all the tournaments you play”.
