Nick Saban won’t attend any satellite camps: ‘I’m kind of old fashioned’
A tweet by the coach reads, “Amazing to me Alabama broke NCAA rules and their Head Coach is lecturing us on the possibility of rules being broken at camps”.
The Michigan-Alabama battle over satellite camps has died down – replaced this week by the Michigan-Rutgers showdown in New Jersey.
“But I think they’ll find a way to govern it”.
On Thursday, Saban reiterated that he’d rather spend time running Alabama camps on the school’s Tuscaloosa campus than running around the country the way some of Alabama’s peers have done this summer. But when Patrick asked him about Harbaugh and his staff’s satellite camp tour this month – over 35 camps in 22 states as well as American Samoa and Australia – Quinn said he understands the motivation. Everybody has the right to manage their program like they want. “I don’t really care”.
“I’m anxious about what we do, what our program does, what our players need to do, what our coaches are doing”. “We made the decision that it’s most important especially in this time period because there’s only limited time periods in the summer time where we have time to spend with our players”. That’s enough for me. At the SEC spring meetings in Destin in late May, Saban became very animated explaining his rationale for his opposition to satellite camps, at one point pounding the podium to emphasize his point. “That’s what I can handle”. The Crimson Tide have won four of the past seven national titles, including last season’s second College Football Playoff. “Muhammad Ali was a significant event to me because I worked a lot of days at my dad’s service station, but the one I remember is when he fought Sonny Liston”, Saban recalled Thursday. In those days, they weren’t on TV so we had this huge throng of people about like this all circled around the vehicle with the auto doors open and the radio on.
Saban runs the nation’s top football program.
Meanwhile, Jones has racked up an astonishing 414 receptions for 6,201 yards in five National Football League seasons.
